“Winter”: that one simple word brings on thoughts of cold nights and warm fires, spent browsing the internet with satellite service from get.wildblue.com. But now let’s add the word “sports” to it, and completely different thoughts enter the brain. As you can see, though, satellite internet can still be useful when it comes to learning about the exciting world of winter sports.

It doesn’t matter whether you are going to ski or simply enjoy playing in the snow. Something out in that crisp air will appeal to almost anyone. Snowboarding, sledding, ice fishing, or cross-country skiing: the sky’s the limit when it comes to winter sports possibilities.

Just how strenuous of an activity are you looking for? Do you want to feel the burn yourself, or would you rather relax and watch one of the many winter spectator sports? Of course, even when you’re in the stands of an ice hockey game, things can get strenuous. With this sport, the fans are as enthusiastic as the players who play the game.

When winter arrives, you have the ability to enjoy the weather as a family. It’s the perfect time of the year to spend time with your kids. Many children love the snow and brisk feeling that it gives you with the cool, crisp air. Of course, a cup of hot cocoa while relaxing in front of the fire is fun as well, and fun should be the only thing on your mind when it comes to winter sports.

Missing the Fun of Winter Sports? Try Dry Skiing

One of the biggest downfalls of snow sports is the seasonal nature of the games. Having to hang up the skis or snowboard for six months of the year is devastating to many extreme sport fanatics. While there is not a large presence in North America and Europe, because of year round access to snow in parts of both continents, the United Kingdom has a number of dry ski slopes that allow for year round activity. The material used to create these artificial slopes has evolved over time. One of the biggest challenges is creating a surface that provides both quality movement and doesn’t ruin equipment. A type of plastic with small spikes for added grip was one of the first dry slope materials used. Skiers and Snowboarders who try these slopes have to use excessive amounts of wax to protect their equipment. Improvement of this technology has facilitated the use of this in both indoor and outdoor slopes. A recent invention is a product called Snowflex, made by a British company. Made of polymer composite, this tile-form material is said to create an authentic feel and incorporates a misting system to help reduce the problems of friction. Snowflex is used at more than 30 slopes. This material can even be found at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. (more…)

Your skill level, the type of terrain you will be experiencing, and the snow quality, all determine what skis will be most suitable for you. Some skiers become extremely comfortable with one particular style, but in order to make the most of your experience, it is important to select the appropriate design for each skiing condition.Twin tip skis are most often used by young less experienced skiers because of the balance they offer and the ease with which they can be maneuvered. True to their name, these skis turn up slightly on each end and have a boot mount near the centre. These skis are wider at the ends and narrower in the middle.Telemark skis are used for touring and the boot only attaches at the toe. With the back of the foot not attached to the ski, turns can be easily executed. Cross-country skis also only attach at the toe but are lighter and narrower than telemark skis. Because cross country skiing can sometimes include going up hill, a special wax is usually applied to these skis to aid with inclines. (more…)
